The time of May 27-29, 2011 in my life was dedicated for Anime North 2011 as a comic vendor.

Great fun I definitely had.

It was my first time to sell fan arts at AN. I'm not a huge fan of most of the anime franchise-at least for the products of the past decade-however it's impossible for me to deny that Japanese pop culture has influenced my childhood in a great scale. So yeah, I embraced it with fan art!

It was quite an extraordinary experience since I was almost the only person with Ultraman fan arts to the scene.

More than enough people seemed to recognize the characters on my posters, yet not being able to relate to the characters. Which made sense since Ultraman isn't a big thing in North America. There were more characters they actually grew up with; think about characters from Nintendo franchise: countless number of people spent their childhood with NES, you know.

So basically I targeted the wrong market (from what I know, Ultraman series stopped being imported since 1960's for unknown reasons) with Ultraman products.

As somewhat of a backup plan, I prepared my secondary items: Team Fortress 2 paper dolls that are based on Minecraft 3D model structure.

Big enough number of people showed interest, yet I guess the fact that customers had to build dolls themselves were a bit of a turn off.

I didn't really have a choice since I was not supposed to sell anything pre-made 3D as a comic vendor, but I still think it could've been more thought through. :'( A lesson taken well.

Poor Heavy fell apart due to clumsy building skill I had..

I'm sorry I tried building you first as a guinea pig.

After all, I still had a great amount of fun =D

Especially with moments like two Japanese ladies stopped by, and started naming every Ultraman in Japanese (:'D my effort fully paid by that single moment, I swear)

or the moment where my girlfriend and I spotted Miso from Katamari,

or the moment my friend-I think- brought an amazing gift from her/his HK trip!

D: my nerdness exploded that moment, and these two epic warriors occasionally enjoy mega battles somewhere in Toronto nowadays when I can't help but start touching them.

...that didn't sound wrong, did it? I hope not.

April 27th 2011 was definitely one of my favourite annual rituals within the city. :P

I'm pretty sure it is not bound to neither Toronto nor Canada, since there are few web pages like this showing this event is nationwide throughout North America. I tried to look up some history about this event but ended up getting distracted by things like.. a zombie-proof-house.

Every year what I feel is that the line up is long, yet worth waiting for my turn, since it constantly moves forward whenever I'm about to feel like it's taking long. I mean yeah, it's only a scoop or two per person, after all.

So yeah, I ended up with these bad boys. Paying only $0.31 per scoop. I can tell that it was a good treat for my recent icecream crave.

PS. I found out last night that it was 2 scoops per person in downtown TO, and 3 scoops in uptown. I'm thinking about moving fo' seerius now.

what this post is about: my love of Japanese ramen in Toronto, Canada, and a QUICK review over few related restaurants. It's going to be SO BIASED, oh yeah :D

...just kidding.

Yes. I am so very going to update this blog with my love for the food.

I've been looking for a restaurant that has a good ramen on their menu for awhile. Well, with not much of eager and zeal, but it's been always above my head, haunting me of an awesome noodle dish.

I can't even count how many times I have craved for Japanese ramen after reading mangas like 20th Century Boys or those infamous cooking mangas. It's like watching a film where the characters munches on nachos right before your eyes, and I fall for the stimulation like a kid.

If you are a Torontonian(I don't like the term Torontoist. Don't point that out please, I want to devour and cleanse that word from the air)you might know know how easy it is to find "Japanese restaurants." But it's hard to find something that's close to "real" Japanese food, isn't it? I mean, there are more than enough sushi-bento box restaurants that are mostly owned by non-Japanese folks, with, of course, decently quality of food and price for some of them.

There are few restaurants like: Manpuku, Ematei, Koyoi... where you can find so-called "real Japanese" dishes and recipes. However, except Koyoi, with their special ramen with 25 limited bowls on every Wednesday, I couldn't find a decent place that provides ramen.

and personally I found Kenzo and Ajisen-Ramen PRETTY DAMN AWFUL.

I rant easily, sorry about that.

My apologies if you like their ramen, however, to me they provided decent taste of greasy and factorized flavour in the bowls of ramen I ordered(I always went with around 5-6 friends of mine, and tasted different bowls, and I don't remember any of them being incredible, but just "ok it doesn't suck TOO bad, but still not that good.")

With quite disappointing experiences of ramen in Toronto, finally a good friend of mine informed me that Konichiwa on 31 Baldwin St. has ramen on their menu.

Thankfully I live nearby, and on the 20th of April, 2011, with my girlfriend aside, we walked through the terrible wind blows and finally reached at the doorstep of Konichiwa, the restaurant I never laid my eyes upon.

It sucks that I don't usually bring a camera around, but the overall interior design and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very cozy and warm. Wooden frames and hanging embroidery patterns on the walls, with a collection of few Japanese paintings..

OK YOU KNOW WHAT, STRAIGHT TO THE RAMEN.

They have only 2 ramen on the menu.

choice of 2 on broth: shoyu / miso

choice of 4 for topping: pork / beef / chicken / tofu

+ add 2 gyoza dumpings for a price.

each of us got: miso broth + pork on top, shoyu broth + beef on top.

as side dishes, 6 pcs of Spicy Salmon Maki and Shishamo(3 grilled sea smelts on their menu) were decent appetizers. Compare to the most sushi rolls, these makis were a bit thicker, with both salmon and rice, I remember. Shishamo was a bit burnt, but for such small fish, I think it's hard to avoid their thin tail and head tips to be safe from the grill.

Anyways, the ramen bowls were very succulent.

Juicy marinated meats on top, warm broth that has depth in its taste, chewy curly ramen noodles... I don't have a tongue of a professional food critic, but I can tell you one thing that honesty is the biggest virtue I value, and hell yeah their ramen is TASTY.

For both miso and shoyu broth, they were not too salty nor too sweet, bitter or sour. I even added some spicy sesame oil they provided, it still tasted awesome.

Shoyu broth has very clean taste like Udon broth, but less salt and sugar, but more taste of the broth itself-Oh man I suck at describing taste- On the other hand, miso broth is SLIGHTLY thicker than shoyu broth, therefore feels heavier but you can taste the miso in a level that the scent of miso remain on your tongue, but not for too long.

I didn't taste anything "artificial." That I can tell you for sure, although I'm still a modern child that has a tongue dulled by chemicals.

But.

Man, this damn ramen made me devour everything that was in the bowl except chopsticks and spoon.

I mean, they might not have the best ramen in the world, but from what I had so far in Toronto, they definitely offer something that will make me go back for.

Even right now as I'm writing about it, I crave it already.

I hope it's not the sign of some addictive sedative they put in the ramen :9

Though it was only for few years I've spent my time to learn from him,

There was no one else who taught me more than Mr. Doug Moore in my life.

His art, his vision, his attitude and his wittiness opened my clumsy, young mind and led me to take the path where there is full of joy and creativity.

I wouldn't say I was the best student of his. Rather, I was the laziest and the most troublesome student who loved to spend my spare time on the dusty couch of Art / Philosophy room in HSC until I get caught and yelled at to leave the room.

After I left high school to take my steps further to the outside world, I've met numbers and numbers of people and discovered that how incredibly lucky I was to be taught by a man like Mr. Moore, who was full of wisdom and inspiration.

I still think that no one ever showed me such depth, passion and insight of life.

I could never told him how grateful I feel about the fact that I was his student, once.

Also, as I go further into the art and design community, I always promised myself that one day, I will make Mr. Moore feel proud that I was his student, and I will let the people know that he is the man who made me walk on this beautiful path where I found true gems of my life.

Though it seems that there will be no more chance for me to make my wish come true, I will let myself stay in a sorrow because I don't believe that you are gone forever, Mr. Moore.

I know you will be somewhere with your half-bitten apple in your big, rough grasp, looking down upon me and tell me that it is time for me to make some art.

Mr. Moore, all the positive and joyful rays I absorbed from you, I will spread them to the people I meet in my life to bring your inspiration. Just like you did to me.

Throughout my life, I will also show the world that I can give and share what I have. Because that was what I learned from you: anyone can give.

The bright side of life you helped me reveal, I will live upon it everyday.

Not a moment I will let despair and frustration drag me down to the bottom. Instead, I will enjoy them when they come to me to live this life in full.

So let the light you showed me live in me, and all of us.

and I hope the everlasting peace will be with you now..

Forever and more, I will miss you, Mr. Moore.

A girl came up to me looking like she's about to complain how rude it is to draw her face without a permission.

As she arrived at my table, she went,

"Excuse me, but I think.." then she had to pause for like 5 seconds which must've felt like 50 years for her.

She couldn't find any portraits on my sketchbook; but only ceilings, pipes, lamps and cables.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, miss.

However, I was looking up to her, waiting with an unending curiosity about what she'll say next, then she randomly pointed at somewhere around the cables and said,

"...I like this part."

I thanked her with a smile.

Then, for the second time in my life, I saw someone walking with such great haste towards the exit and disappear.

I feel like doodling among the crowd more often :)

PS. The first time when I saw a person walking so fast was when my friend had to run but couldn't because he had to look calm when he had a diarr... ...yup, it's what you are thinking.

Student : No, sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student : No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.

Student : And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof: Yes.

Student : No sir. There isn't.

(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure.

Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class is in uproar.)

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?

(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it?.....No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir? (The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

Student : That is it sir.. The link between man & God is FAITH. That is all that keeps things moving & alive.

(The professor stared the student, satisfied. Someone sitting at the back side raises his hand. The professor’s eye moves onto him, followed by students’. The professor nodded his head as a sign of giving permission to speak.)

Prof : Ok, son, what is it?

Satirev : My name is Satirev, an alumnus of this university.

Prof : Ok then, for what did you raise your hand?

Sat : I am going to leave this room, because of that insane so-called classmate and a stupid man who is agreeing with him.

(The professor and the student could not play calm. They knew that he was pointing out themselves.)

Prof : Against whom is your dissatisfaction? Against me, or that son?

Sat : I have already heard that “that son” is crazy, but I was not expecting YOU acting like this.

Student : Is there anything wrong with my opinion?

Sat : I will ask you back, what is NOT wrong with your opinion?

(Satirev stood up, and walked down to the platform. The rest of the room was staring at him, breathing quietly. Satirev stood face to face with the Christian student.)

Satirev : You mentioned about electromagnetic wave. Let’s make it sure. You told us that you cannot actually sense ANYTHING of God. You said that E.M. and God both exist as well. Then how can you give us electricity and magnetism as examples, even though you cannot sense? Do you believe in Electromagnetism? Is “Saint” Qualcomm, your second messiah?

(The rest of the class laughed at his last word)

Student : I was trying to say that there exists something that cannot be sensed.

Satirev : Another wordplay. Our five senses surely have their limitation, and again we cannot have any perception with insensible things. For example, infrasound of whales, ultrasound of bats. So we believe in those infrasound and ultrasound, huh?

(Student was not able to say in return.)

Satirev : We are developing various technology to turn insensible into sensible. Invisible, inaudible radio waves are translated into audible sound. Ah, sorry, you believe in radio waves, don’t you? Which channel do you believe in?

(Small laugh from the rest)

Satirev : It is very fancy approach, saying that the God is something we cannot sense. The im-measured, the almighty. But hey, there are more objects that cannot be observed!

Student : Angel?

Satirev : Zeus, actually.

(Classroom stirred as Satirev refers Zeus.)

Student : Are you talking about Zeus from Greek mythology?

Satirev : No, Zeus from Greek Bible. It could be a mythology for you. But comparing to Jewish mythology, it is more sensitive, humane and educational. The sacrifice of Jesus is not to be compared to Prometheus’. Jehovah was there from the beginning, interfering EVERY part of the world, but Zeus was a frontier, who have won his universe by fighting against the Titan Gods. So-called Christian Bible is the second Pandora’s Box that Zeus had given. You opened it, you were trapped by him.

Student : Under what evidence can you dare speak that? It is known that who wrote The Old Testament and the New Testament. There is no such evidence that they are Pandora’s Boxes.

Satirev : The “insensible” part – that is the evidence. Traps are always so clever for rabbits that they cannot know.

Student : You are breaking the common sense.

Satirev : Can you disproof it anyway? I am in relation with Zeus by faith.

(Student seems like have something to talk, but soon he decided not to. He felt embarrassed, knowing that it was nothing but a self-contradiction.)

Satirev : Zeus also said that he is going to throw all Christians like you into the Tartarus, by believing a fake god.

Student : There is no such phrase in Greek Myt...Bible.

Satirev : I am in relation with Zeus, not by book, by faith. What you call “the Holy Spirits”, something like that, whisper me the truth. But they are not the same name with YOURS. They are called, “the Greek Spirits”.

Prof : Can you prove those spirits?

Satirev : Can you accept the Greek Spirits? You are not even sure that you have your brain in your skull. Maybe if you take a Xray picture or MRI of your head, you will pray for it 5 times a day?

(The professor turned into red. Someone was laughing at him, but soon seized after the professor fiercely looked at them.)

Satirev : We’re done with this joke. You’re not even able to disproof Zeus, then how can you tackle others such as Shiva, Ahura Mazda? Your “fine” logic can be applied to every single thing that we can imagine, even the legendary coyote that feeds on Jehovah.

Student : It is against etiquette.

Satirev : Gentle than you people’s attitude against so called atheists or agnostics. Judgement thing, or Hell…something like that.

Student : Ok. I agree that my logic can be abused, but it seems that you didn’t find any contradiction in the logic itself.

(Satirev laughed loud)

Satirev : So, you are proud of your logic thing? Ok, let’s then talk about that. You disagree with Darwinism, right?

Student : I believe in the Creation. As I have said, no one had seen the process of evolution. It is nothing but a theory.

Satirev : Nothing but a theory? Aha, you don’t understand evolution because you don’t observe the evolutionary process, from your phrase.

Student : Yes, I don’t.

Satirev : What about the fossil?

Student : There are too few fossils out there. You probably heard about the Missing Link.

(Satirev could not help laughing at his speech. Student sitting in the left side of the classroom were also watching the situation with smile on their face.)

Satirev : Do you think that I have grown up from infant to this mature body?

Student : Yes, of course.

Satirev : Have you observed my growth? Maybe I was just as I am from the beginning.

(Students laughed. The professor finally turned his back and sat.

Student : You have your pictures.

Satirev : Sure! Graduation pictures of kindergarten, elementary student, middle school, high school, university. It is too bad, that I have lost the rest of the pictures of mine by fire. Oh, we lack my picture to prove my picture! For you, the one who are not satisfied with that so many fossils, 5 pictures are useless to prove my growth. You heard about the Missing Link?

Student : So you have the Missing Link yourself?

Satirev : Yes I do. I have born with Jenifer Lopez’s body. But Hera was jealous of me and turned me into this body.

(The student couldn’t say a word, because the embarrassment Satirev’s phrase gives has not much difference between that of himself. Only thing he could give was sweat.)

Satirev : Embarrassed, huh? I don’t see any sense of duty to refute your logic one by one. According to your logic, I believe in Zeus, and am able to walk under heavy rain without concerning lightning and be proud of my Jenifer Lopez times. You made a logic that can say, technically, ANY imagination may be real.

Student : …

Satirev : Darwinism is a trend. It is not to explain what was there in the very beginning. Function, for example, it is not to find the Y value with x is 0. We instead name the trend of the variation as evolution, and study that. If you cannot understand evolution because of the lack of fossils, you are nothing but a pure middle school student, who cannot draw a graph even though with thousands of points.

(Student thought for a while, and says.)

Student : Is there anything wrong with my opinion about heat and light?

Satirev : Man, are you talking the good god bad god thing? You tried to use heat and cold, light and dark to tackle that professor who is distinguishing good and evil. But they do exist separately. The weakness of good is not evil.

Student : I cannot understand.

Satirev : You didn’t said that foolish thing if you could understand. Let me give you an example. You want a Big Mac, but you lack of 50 cents. If I give you 50 cents, am I good?

Student : Yes, you are.

Satirev : What if I give you a penny?

Student : You are good.

Student : What if I don’t give you a penny?

(The student hesitated.)

Satirev : I am not good. But I am not evil either. If I take your penny, that is evil. You said that the absence of heat is cold, but the absence of goodness is not evil. Not good, not evil – those middle-class things take most part of your ordinary life. There are millions of people not giving you penny nor taking your penny. Can you simply say that people, the absence of goodness, is evil?

(The rest of class nodded and admired for him. The professor still couldn’t raise his head.)

Satirev : Conclusion. You have made a wrong judgment for the good and the evil, trapping that professor who is not able to see me again, made an arrogant speech that considers your lack of understanding on Darwinism a lack of observation, and gave us a pre-recognized electromagnetic wave as an example to compare with the insensible almighty. And the most important thing is-

(Satirev walked toward the student. The student looked at him, nervous.)

Satirev : The burden of proof is yours. Professor asked you about the God’s presence. Then you had to develop your idea of existence, no matter the professor knows this or that. After all, you have not given us any evidence or logic that can prove the existence of the almighty. You just answered to the professor pointlessly, and made a conclusion of faith. You have proved that you don’t believe in God with reason – you have proved that you just believe, so God exists.

(Student was with no answer)

Satirev : Look at that so-called professor. Think about how easy the kindergarteners, fresh middle or high school students you can fake. But as it was always, your word cannot be a logical ground of the existence of the God. Now, what remains for you to proof his existence?

Student : Bible remains.

Satirev : Did you forget what the Greek Spirit said? Pandora’s Box! Any disproof?

(Satirev walked out the classroom with joyful laugh. The rest of the students, one by one, cutting the eyes at both the professor and the Christian student, followed him. Soon, only two were left in the classroom – those two. They didn’t say a thing.)

There's a half an hour long conversation between Christopher Beaubien, Walter Chaw, Andrew Grant and Glenn Kenny attached in the dvd version of this movie: Synecdoche, New York.

and there's this part when Walter Chaw says:

This is exactly why I want the songs with revelatory lyrics to make us look around and think about where we are, books like a hearth where we can feel the warmth and comfort, movies that are so profound that it could be even confusing yet thought provoking.

And the beauty about that chaotic catharsis is that it makes me feel ambivalent; just like, I believe how the way life makes everyone feels.

My goodness, I better get a sweet and warm piece of cake to my friend who provided me this opportunity to engage such an astonishing film.

Today is going to be the day, that they are going to throw it back to you... not.

Rather,

It will be the day that I decided to bring my fresh guitar out to get a strap, which led me to a conversation between a bank receptionist who's been playing guitars for 15 years and apparently in love with Bob Dylan and all the 50's and 60's hotshot bands.

It will be the day I thought it is unbelievably warmer than last few days although the actual temperature was about -5°C according to The Weather Network.

It will be the day I repeated the question "why am I here, where do I go?" and didn't come up with a satisfying question for probably the 1,852th time in my life.

It will be the day that I hoped that this will be the last night to struggle with the logo ideas for my parents.

It will be the day I made the mushroom soup for the 2nd time and covered up its clumsy taste with few bites of roasted chicken meats and blogged about it.

PS. I wish eating fruits and sweets can bring my locution to something more palatable.

I decided to stay up all night.

Blamed it all on the sugar, coffee and a nap I took today(I mean, yesterday.)

Was it necessary to put my impulsiveness that way? not really.

It was like an accessory to disguise my meaningless behaviors, I guess.

While I was playing with some watercolors, I saw an ant attracted to the bait-its smell resembles a chocolate, I'd definitely fall for that-I put on the table.

He-although it doesn't have any ability to reproduce-will carry a piece of it, and will probably bring some more of his pack to carry the rest. Then they will have the last supper, the good-bye feast; just like what the instructor told me as he gave the traps to me.

There's no personal emotion, such as hatred against ant society involved at all.

I appreciate ants and their cities. Undoubtedly because of an influence from Bernard Werber and his books.

Just because there are zillions of more ants out there, should I not feel guilty at all for the indirect massacre I'm putting on their colony?

I really don't know.

I believe that I should not affect others in ways that I wouldn't appreciate for myself.

But well.. after all, I'm only a selfish brat that is looking for a peace of my own mind;

I'm not talking about my sister's seldom freak out on ants that is not-really-annoying-but-still-gets-on-my-nerves.

So I'm sorry but, I think I'll lead you guys to the end where it will leave only mysteries and wonders in the history of your society.

one more thing, I can't even pray for ya'll, I'm not religious.. T_T
